Preserving the South Village (and Bleecker Street)

The New York Times has an article today lamenting the slow action of the landmark council to create a new historic district in Greenwich Village. One of the buildings cited in the article is located directly across the street from my apartment at 178 Bleecker St.

And, here's a photo looking across Bleecker St. over the roof tops of the old 1860's tenement buildings.

  1. Currently the old buildings on Bleecker St. could use some renovation, or new development. Most people love the Village, but a lot of the buildings are really old, and could use some updating. In addition , unemployment is high, so new development creates jobs. NYU has been allowed to grow so why can't a small real estate developer better his property by putting up a new building. There are already building heigh limitations, so the argument against minor growth is unnecessary.

  2. I saw the building from the outside in question, and see no real reason why extra floors should not be added. Many of the buildings on Bleecker Street look really old and dilapidated. Basically on West Bleecker only the wealthy can afford market rate apartments anyway. So in effect by keeping it the same you are saving it for the wealthy. Having a eight or ten story new building instead of an old six story building adds value to the neighborhood.

  5. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder because it looks like a gaping hole in what was a block of classic buildings to me. Not particularly encouraged that what rises is going to fit with the feel of the neighborhood.

  6. Well , hopefully the new building will be a plus for the neighborhood. However the other buildings really don't look that great. All of the protestors are really going to look foolish if the new building looks great.
