Tokyo Arrival

Looking down toward Shibuya Crossing.

After a smooth flight from JFK to Tokyo over the weekend it turned out the most exciting part of the journey had yet to come. The two hour, night-time bus ride from the airport to our hotel (Cerulean Tower Hotel) in the Shibuya district was something out of a sci-fi movie. The bus eventually made its' way onto an elevated highway that took us zooming across the city for an hour. It really felt like we were flying, or floating through this humongous metropolis with skyscrapers, small alleyways, neon lights, cars, people and more giving us a first glimpse of Tokyo.

Birds Gone Wild in New York - Peregrine Falcon on Bleecker Street

I was talking on the phone today when I saw this Peregrine Falcon swoop down at about 200 MPH and strike a pigeon in midair, then catch it in its' talons and land on the corner of the building across the street. I was able to snap a couple photos before it launched itself up Bleecker with the pigeon in it's grasp. Wow.

The fourth floor, 15th St. skybridge in Chealsea, converted into a lounge as part of the NYC Google office, played host to a gathering of the Manhattan ukulele club last Thursday. One last hurrah for the maestro of uke-gatherings in this fair city, Rick Bruner, who is leaving Google next week to set out on his "next big thing" startup.

Washington Square Park Reopens

Yay! Today after 18+ months of refurbishment, the tall chain link fences came down in Washington Square allowing people to congregate around the new fountain and enjoy a beautiful spring day. I can't wait for a nice, warm Sunday afternoon for some good bench warming, book reading, music listening good times.

Preserving the South Village (and Bleecker Street)

The New York Times has an article today lamenting the slow action of the landmark council to create a new historic district in Greenwich Village. One of the buildings cited in the article is located directly across the street from my apartment at 178 Bleecker St.

Argentine Dog

I just love this photo...taken during my stint in Argentina during the winter of 2007. The picture was taken in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, one of the most colorful and hence touristy areas in the city. This is part of the Dogs of Argentina collection.

Babel Tales NYC photo series

Danish photographer Peter Funch stakes New York City street corners out for two weeks at a time, taking pictures of passersby from the very same spot. But what he does next may be even more labor-intensive.

For his “Babel Tales” photo series, Funch picked dozens of the same types of pedestrians — smokers, cell-phone gabbers, hospital-scrubs wearers, yawners — and Photoshopped them into the same frames. In one photo, Times Square shutterbugs turn into a swarm of paparazzi. In another, an ocean of kids seems to wash over the city. Funch has even created a New York where everyone carries flowers. Now, wouldn’t that be a nice city to live in?
